A Taste of That Thing in the Desert
August 22, 2021 @ 5:00 pm - 11:00 pm
A Taste of ‘That Thing in the Desert’ is coming to Kensington Crescent this Saturday, August 21st from 5-11pm!
AToTTitD is a free family friendly event that will feature a communal display of arts, science and engineering for kids and grown-ups alike! Inspired by Black Rock City, Alberta Burners will bring a taste of that temporary city, and the context and principles of Burning Man closer to home. Expect to see art displays, fire performances, and dancing to live DJs playing music off the top of Steely T Mutant Vehicle!
With Burning Man’s 10 Principles in mind, specifically that of ‘Gifting’, this event is 100% volunteer driven. Every person involved with this event is gifting their time and talents to share a small taste of what you would find at ‘That Thing in the Desert’!
Another of Burning Man’s 10 Principles that is central to this event is that of “Decommodification”. “In order to preserve the spirit of gifting, this community seeks to create social environments that are unmediated by commercial sponsorships, transactions, or advertising.” At this event you will not find corporate logos, pamphlets, banners, or t-shirts. They collaborate to design an experience as individuals and communities devoid of economic gain. It is very important that as neighbourhood hosts to this event that we respect these governing principles. However, we do hope that everyone benefits from having more people in the area Saturday.
We hope you can join in the festivities the Alberta Regional Burning Man community is bringing to Kensington through lighting, art, and entertainment!
