HISTORY// Kensington is full of history and several buildings in the neighbourhood are designated Historical by Heritage Calgary. The Smith Block, located at 1122 Kensington Rd, was completed in 1911, just four years after the area was annexed to Calgary. The building has been the home to the Hillhurst Confectionary and Ice Cream Parlor (1921-32), the Model Meat Market (1926-28) and the Hillhurst Shoe Hospital. It was home to the first Starbucks in Calgary (1996) and is now home to local coffee shop Deville Coffee, PARKER PR and Indigrow Psychology. Next time you walk by be sure to take a minute to take in all the historical charms of this amazing building!

Celebrating Indigenous Arts in Kensington
Kensington is proud to host “Celebrating Indigenous Arts in Kensington,” a vibrant showcase of Indigenous arts and culture as part of Chinook Blast.
Join us on February 8, from noon to 2 p.m., for an exciting lineup of Indigenous artists and performers who will highlight traditional and contemporary expressions through art, music and storytelling. Visitors can enjoy live performances by Sorrel Rider, representing the Siksika Nation, part of the Blackfoot Confederacy, who will honour the rich history and diversity of Indigenous communities. This outdoor experience offers an opportunity to connect with culture and creativity while embracing the spirit of Calgary’s winter festival.
